Synopsis
Three years ago, Katrina Freeling and Nathan Van Huysen were the brightest literary stars on the horizon, their co-written book topping bestseller lists. But on the heels of their greatest success, they ended their partnership on bad terms, for reasons neither would divulge to the public. They haven’t spoken since, and never planned to, except they have one final book due on contract. Facing crossroads in their personal and professional lives, they’re forced to reunite. The last thing they ever thought they’d do again is hole up in the tiny Florida town where they wrote their previous book, trying to finish a new manuscript quickly and painlessly. Working through the reasons they’ve hated each other for the past three years isn’t easy, especially not while writing a romantic novel. While passion and prose push them closer together in the Florida heat, Katrina and Nathan will learn that relationships, like writing, sometimes take a few rough drafts before they get it right.
My Review
This is a novel with a difference and I loved the fact that it is written about two writers who have collaborated to write a previous best seller and are being pushed to write another one in order to save fading careers by a real life husband and wife writing duo.
What a wonderful easy read this was to enjoy on a lovely summer's day in June, The writing flowed effortlessly from present day to four years previously as well as backwards and forwards between Katrina and Nathan. Each chapter spent just the right amount of interest in that context before transporting you to the next time or character. The use of narrative in the books they had either written, or were writing, to reveal their feelings is clever and , as a reader, you are waiting to see what will happen through their combined narrative.
I have read a few books recently by a collaborative writing duo and , after reading The Roughest Draft, I now have a clear idea as to how this might work and, consequently, I think we get a better book as a result.
As you can probably gather, I loved this book and it is absolutely perfect 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read for anyone wanting a lovely read when they have a few hours to themselves to escape.
