Synopsis
Jane Tennison, now a Detective Sergeant, has been posted to Peckham CID, one of London's toughest areas. As the rubbish on the streets begins to pile up, so does the murder count: two bodies in as many days.
There are no suspects and the manner of death is different in each case. The only link between the two victims is the location of the bodies, found within a short distance of each other near Rye Lane in Peckham. Three days later another murder occurs in the same area. Press headlines scream that a serial killer is loose on 'Murder Mile' and that police incompetence is hampering the investigation.
Jane is under immense pressure to catch the killer before they strike again.Working long hours with little sleep, what she uncovers leaves her doubting her own mind.
My Review
This is the best Jane Tennison mystery so far for me. I was completely hooked from the beginning and though I had guessed the murderer before the end I still didn't quite foresee the ending.
With this fourth book in the series I actually felt that Jane had started to mature and there isn't the same amount of male prejudice against her as in the previous books. The idea for the storyline is gripping and has you turning the pages immediately to see what is happening and who is involved etc. There are so many threads within the story and a number of characters you will have on you "Who Dunnit" list that you will not want to put it down, in fact I read it in two sittings late into the small hours of the morning.
For me this was actually a book that focussed on the solving of the murders rather than male chauvinism etc , which is a positive move in regards to future books in the series for me as I was getting a little fed up of Jane's naivety and the way she is treated by some of her colleagues in the previous books.
Really looking forward to the next book in the series now.
