The Bologna Vendetta by Tom Benjamin

The  Bologna Vendetta

 by Tom Benjamin

The Bologna Vendetta by Tom Benjamin was published on 13th May by Constable and is the 6th in the Daniel Leicester series, though they are all standalone books.

My thanks to the author and publisher for sending me a copy to review and to Random Things Tours for inviting me onto the tour.

Synopsis

Amid the oppressive heat of a Bologna summer, English detective Daniel Leicester relives his beloved wife's final days. Vivid memories are awakened by the sight of her bicycle - missing since the accident that killed her - being ridden by a stranger through the city's tight medieval streets.

As unfinished business bleeds - quite literally - into the present, the sickening realisation Lucia's death wasn't an accident begins to dawn on Daniel. As he embarks on a quest for the truth, this most personal of crusades leads him to two very different worlds: the secretive, ancient realm of freemasonry he encountered during his first Bologna winter, and the 'Reclaim Bologna' activists he stumbles across this blistering summer.

What links these contrasting factions? Is there a chance Lucia wasn't the woman Daniel believed her to be? And will the truth be too painful, or too perilous, to bear?

My Thoughts

This is the second book in the Daniel Leicester series by Tom that I have read and I must admit I didn’t see this one coming plot wise. It really had me wondering how well you know someone who you are close to and do they live their life on two levels.

Tom cleverly has you questioning what were the circumstances, sinister or otherwise, that lead to the death of Lucia . You will find yourself pulled into the undercurrents of life in Bologna, a life far different to what presents itself on the surface, as you delve further into the book searching for the answers that Daniel is looking for.

The characters and storyline , yet again from Tom, are well developed, creating gripping imagery whilst the plot thickens as Daniel gets drawn in to finding what happened to Lucia.

It is not a long read and the fast pace of the book allows you the privilege of reading this in a couple of sittings if you put the world to one side for a while and immerse yourself in a side of Bologna you may not yet have come across.
