Synopsis
When Julia’s husband is brutally murdered in a random attack, her life unravels in ways she never could have foreseen. Haunted by his death and spiraling into despair, Julia seeks refuge in a secluded Italian villa she has mysteriously inherited from a stranger. But her sanctuary becomes a prison as she uncovers disturbing connections to her own past – and faces chilling threats that may not be imaginary. Caught between a heritage she doesn’t understand and a darkness she can’t escape, Julia must confront secrets that could cost her what little she has left. The Unraveling of Julia is a gripping, atmospheric tale of grief, memory, and a descent into psychological terror that will keep readers turning pages deep into the night. My Thoughts
Why I haven’t come across Lisa Scottoline before I don’t know, however, I am really glad that I can now say that I have read one of her books. The Unravelling of Julia seemed a little far fetched at the beginning , though in some respects it is something you dream of. An unknown person leaving you a Tuscan villa and a fortune to go with it would be my idea of heaven.
However, as Julia finds out, this type of luck can come at a cost and she has already been through a tragedy that none of us would want to experience along with wondering who she really is and how is she connected to her benefactor.
To say this is a compelling read is an understatement. It is not a difficult, or long read and I read it over a couple of days. The narrative flows easily from one chapter to the next as Julia uncovers the truth about herself and the villa and Scottoline’s descriptive writing allows you to create images of the characters and settings as you progress through the book.
So to summarise, I loved The Unravelling of Julia, the discovery of an author I had not come across before a the chance to escape into a book for a few hours that was a compelling read.
