Synopsis

Dark retellings of beloved fairy tales. Disturbing visions of the present and dire warnings of the future. Great estates where devastating secrets linger in every shadowed hall. This chilling gothic horror anthology contains it all.

My Thoughts

What a dark collection of short stories this little book holds. Each of which will have you looking over your shoulder or checking whether the line of salt is securely in place outside your bedroom door.

Some of these stories are very short , ie a couple of pages, but they are equally as captivating as the longer ones and will definitely leave you with a ghostly feeling. Each retelling will draw you into its dark, and at times gruesome, setting straight away making you feel as though you have entered the story yourself and left your world behind.

This clever writing by Judith is very reminiscent of how fairytales used to pull you into the pages as a child and shows that as adults we are no different when if comes to being immersed within the pages.

For me this was the perfect book to settle down with as the nights are drawing in, the curtains are drawn, the fire lit and you wonder what may be lurking in the dark recesses of the room and at the top of the stairs.

Finally all I can say is that I too am thankful to Holly for introducing Judith to the Gothic Horror Genre and I look forward to experiencing more of the heebie - jeebies in the future.

About Judith

Judith was born in Orkney, grew up in Lincolnshire and now lives in the far north of Scotland. Her work draws inspiration from folklore, experience and the natural world. The Backwater, Judith’s debut book, was a finalist in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards 2019. Judith followed this with Dance With Me in 2020 and Honour’s Rest in October 2021. Judith’s latest book, The Folly at Raighvan Park, is a chilling gothic horror set in Victorian England, in the aftermath of a terrible railway disaster. When she isn’t writing, Judith is a teacher at a lovely little primary school. She sometimes finds that writing gets usurped by crafting, music, and being a generally doting spaniel owner. Judith is published by Crowvus, a Caithness based publisher.
