Synopsis

It was a grey and misty morning when she appeared on the rugged Cornish shore. A girl of only four years old, soaking wet, unable to speak. With no one to claim her, rumours started to swirl and the villagers began to believe she was brought from the sea, the daughter of mystical sea creatures. Cornwall early 1800s: now destitute and newly widowed, Isabel returns to the village she was found in to start a new life. As she settles into life in Cornwall, she feels the sea calling to her to come back home. Then one night, a group of dangerous raiders arrive at her door, carrying their wounded captain, Jack Carlyon. Isabel decides to care for him and soon senses a powerful connection, and even after Jack recovers, she finds herself unable to forget him. But they cannot be together – she is a child of the sea and he is a man of the land – and so begins a love story that will push them both to the edge of their hearts…

My Thoughts

Gosh, what is there not to like about this incredible story. For a debut novel it blew my mind away with its professionalism and dedication to detail. The writing just draws you in to the beautiful Cornish surroundings that I love, along  with the lives of the people who lived there . As the reader you feel as though you are seeing it through the characters eyes and Isabel is so descriptive in what she sees that you are taken deep into the heart of the novel.

You will feel the love, horror and revulsion that Isabel experiences whilst also asking yourself if she really is the daughter of The Sea Bucca !!!! Do you believe in these old Cornish Tales ?

For me Linda had a winning formula right from the start with a story of loss, hardship, love and smuggling and she interweaves these different threads with ease, coaxing them into the lovely tapestry of The Sea Child.

This is one of those stories for me that, as soon as you have finished it, you need time to relive it and go over certain aspects of it in your head, due to the facts that you have been drawn into the very depths with Isabel . In fact it was a couple of days before I wanted to read another book as I was so enjoying just sitting and reflecting on what I had read.

If you ever need a book to escape into this is definitely the one and it will be staying on my bookshelf for a long time. I sincerely hope it is not too long before we are treated to another novel from Linda; even better if it is also set in Cornwall.
