The Sunken Sailor

 by Patricia Moyes

The Sunken Sailor by Patricia Moyes was published by Farrago

on 2nd April 2026 and is the second book in The Inspector Tibbett series.

My thanks to Farrago for sending me a copy to review and to

Random Things Tours for inviting me onto the tour.

Synopsis

Inspector Henry Tibbett and his wife, Emmy, are enjoying a holiday on a friend's yacht, lazily sailing from one little English sea-town to the next. It should all be delicious indolence... except that Henry can't stop thinking about death. Well, one death in particular. The death of a local sailor. And he really can't stop thinking about it when it starts looking as though the drowned sailor is somehow connected to the robbery at a nearby manor house.

My Thoughts

The Sunken Sailor is a Cosy Crime Mystery that was written in the late 1950’s/60’s following on from the likes of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers whose writings were now in the past.

In the Inspector Tibbett series Moyes rekindles the interest in these humorous murder mysteries that were intended to test your sleuthing skills without subjecting you to lots of blood and gore in the process. Although this is one of a series, The Sunken Sailor reads very well as a standalone in its own right as there is not any background information knowledge concerning Henry and Emmy that is needed in order to understand the plot and the characters you encounter throughout.

The progression of the storyline through your visit to Berrybridge Haven with the London weekend sailing set and their contrast to the locals who live characters will have you laughing , whilst at the same time trying to deduce “Who Dunnit” . There are several twists and turns within the plot that will have you heading off down one path only to turn back and revisit the understanding you have gained so far. Will you decide who the murderer was before the end of the book, well I’ll leave that to you to find out !!!!

Even though Patricia Moyes is no longer with us she has left a legacy of cosy crime fiction that rightly deserves its place in the history of literature and it is good that Farrago are initiating a revival in her novels.
