Synopsis

Winter has arrived in Hazy Hills Wood, covering everything in a blanket of snow. Food is hard to find, and the animals are getting hungry. To make things worse, there is a scary food thief on the prowl.

Stikki heads out into the cold to find his secret stash, but when he doesn’t come home, Rella goes searching for him. A frightening journey looms ahead as Stikki and Rella are forced to confront their enemies and the dreaded longlegs.

Deep in the heart of the ancient wood stands the animals’ sacred ash tree. When Brodboar the badger spots something strange high on the tree’s branches, he is shocked by the discovery and begins to worry. Is it a warning?

With Stikki and Rella still missing—can the woodland animals work together to find their friends before it’s too late?





My Thoughts 


Before you even open the book you need to take time to just enjoy the cover showing Stikki and his mate Rella in the woods. Tree Spirits is the second book in the Stikki The Squirrel series though it reads equally well as a standalone in its own right. I can assure you that by the time you have finished reading the book you will be looking at all squirrels and wondering if they act like Stikki and Rella.

The book is aimed at junior school children and Jane’s love of nature and what is around us shines through from all chapters in an easy,well written style. The story follows the squirrels on their quest to find food and the food thief whilst at the same time highlighting the importance of friendships and keeping themselves and each other safe in the snowy woods. This is a lovely story to show children the importance of friendship and support through  student and the animal world and it also helps children understand that it is not just humans that have feelings and need friendships and support but other species as well.
