Isaac and the Egg by Bobby Palmer

Isaac and the Egg by Bobby Palmer was published on 13th April 2023 by Headline Review. My thanks to the author and publisher for sending me a copy to review and to Random Book Tours for inviting me to take part on the tour.

Synopsis

Heartbreaking and heart-stealing, this bestselling modern-day fable is an unforgettable novel about sorrow, joy, friendship and love.

When Isaac Addy walks into the woods on the worst day of his life and finds something extraordinary there, he already knows he's going to take it home.

A grieving Isaac and his curious new friend are unlikely companions. They don't even speak the same language. But their chance encounter will transform Isaac's life in ways he cannot yet imagine.

And maybe he will finally be able to tell the truth.

Sometimes, to get out of the woods, you have to go into them. Isaac and the Egg is one of the most hopeful, honest and wildly imaginative novels you will ever read.

My review

This is a story that takes you through the whole gamut of emotions. You experience the raw grief of humanity in a way that many of us can sadly relate to at some point in our lives. The need to scream and let the pain surface is expertly handled within the story whilst then following onto the unleashing of all the anguish and despair Isaac feels at the loss of Mary.

You are then taken on Isaac's journey of acceptance, during which you will laugh , cry and above all think. And it is the latter that is important. You need to have quiet times as you read the story to fully take on board all that is happening, and why. Why is Isaac reacting in the way that he does, why does he shut the world out and rely on Egg. Is  Egg real or a figment of his imagination. So many things to think about, so many ways of looking at how we cope with raw grief. What also restores faith in humanity is the persistence of Isaac's family and neighbours in their care and support, never giving up no matter what reaction they get.

Grief aside , there are some wonderfully touching moments within the story, especially in how Egg develops as Isaac's support and I will never eat Baked Beans on toast again without thinking about this book !!!!!

The surprise twist near the end of the book took me completely unawares and added a completely new dimension to what I had just read and was incredibly moving , as was the final chapter when at last Isaac finds peace.

For a debut novel this is beautifully written and I am already looing forward to reading Bobby's second novel in the Spring of 2024.

Finally from me, all I would say is there is a time in most peoples lives that we could do with an Egg like the one Isaac was so lucky to find.

An incredible 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read.
