Dig two Graves

 by Heather Peck

Dig Two Graves by Heather Peck was published on 12th July 2023 and is the 5th book in the DCI Greg Geldard Norfolk Mysteries

My thanks to the author and the publisher for sending me a copy to review and to Random Book Tours for inviting me to take part on the tour.

Synopsis

Greg stumbles upon the gruesome murder of a police informant and realizes his colleague has gone missing, presumed kidnapped.
As he seeks Sarah in a desperate race against time, he uncovers a sinister County Lines operation, entangled with money laundering and a labyrinthine network of organised crime. The pursuit is intensifying when the man at the centre of the web directs his malevolence towards Greg, targeting not only his home and his cat, but also his beloved partner, Chris.

This gripping narrative unfolds in the captivating world of the Norfolk Broads, involving a number of contemporary issues from knife crime to the profound impact of revenge on perpetrator and victim.

'a really brilliant series of books ... gripping, thrilling and very intense'

'Heather Peck has created a winning character in Geldard ... (she) is also a brilliant creator of plots.'

If you like the books of Elly Griffiths and L J Ross, you'll love this series.

My Review

Even though this is Book Five in the DCI Greg Geldard Norfolk Mysteries, you can read this one as a standalone in its own right. Straight away it draws you in through its gruesome opening linked to murder and kidnapping ; so much so that you want to find out more and the story doesn't disappoint as it progresses.
there are the usual types of character you would expect in most Detective/ Murder Mysteries though, for me, some of them were taken to a far darker level that had me feeling emotionally moved at times due to the excellent descriptive writing that Heather uses to pull the reader in.
The story touches on issues that are happening all around us in the times we live in and it doesn't matter whether you are living in the countryside or in the middle of a city, these ruthless gangs are all around.
The characters that Heather creates within her books develop until you feel as though you have known them for years , as her descriptive writing creates images for you until you feel as though you are there observing what is happening.
If you haven't read any of Heather's books before they are well worth adding to your list of Detective Mystery stories.

About the Author

I'm the author of the multi-award-winning Greg Geldard series of murder mysteries, set in rural North Yorkshire and Norfolk. I have also just published my first children's book; Tails of Two Spaniels.

Writing - and especially reading - have always been my first love, but for a long time both took a back seat to my other career in animal welfare and farming. I have been both farmer and agricultural policy adviser. I bred sheep and alpacas, reared calves, broke ploughs, represented the UK in international negotiations, specialised in emergency response from Chernobyl to bird flu, managed controls over pesticides and GM crops, saw legislation through parliament and got paid to eat KitKats while on secondment to Rowntree. After early retirement I chaired an NHS Trust, worked on animal welfare, sailed a boat on the Norfolk Broads, volunteered in Citizens Advice and the Witness Service and vaccinated humans against Covid. In 2019 I did a course on crime writing run by the National Centre for Writing with the University of East Anglia, and the rest, as they say, is history.

My crime stories are set in the rural environment of North Yorkshire and Norfolk, because agriculture is the world I know best and I have lived in both counties. The children's book draws heavily on my experiences with multiple springer spaniels.

My main protagonist has grown with each story and his life has changed in ways I couldn’t have predicted at the start. When I started writing Secret Places I didn’t intend Greg Geldard to be the main protagonist. But I find that he, and other characters, take on a life of their own. How they react to circumstance affects what and how they feel, and therefore how they evolve. That too gives me immense satisfaction. Greg Geldard is now a man with a rounded personality; some strengths, some weaknesses, some insights and some blind spots.

I live in Norfolk between the Broads and the sea, with my partner Gary and a menagerie currently comprising two dogs, two cats, two hens, one rabbit and heaven knows how many fish. We have no plans to add to it!
