Synopsis
In 1973 Jane Tennison, aged 22, leaves the Metropolitan Police Training Academy to be placed on probationary exercise in Hackney where criminality thrives. We witness her struggle to cope in a male-dominated, chauvinistic environment, learning fast to deal with shocking situations with no help or sympathy from her superiors. Then comes her involvement in her first murder case.
My review
The big question on my mind at the moment is how on earth did I get to the age I am without reading the Tennison books, or any book, by Lynda La Plante !!!!!!!!! Anyone would think that an avid reader like myself who can easily read over one hundred books a year, and mainly detective ones, that I would have read at least one. But no, I hadn't until now and gosh have I got some catching up to do because I was hooked from the first page of this almost 600 page novel about WPC jane Tennison. So much so that I binge read it over two days and didn't finish it until the small wee hours of the morning.
The tension, suspense and development of relationships in all aspects of the story are amazing, especially the character of Jane, who you feel all her pain, love, angst etc as you read the book.
Even though this is a long story, it doesn't feel like it as it moves at a cracking pace and you have to have your wits about you in order to keep up as you turn page after page.
It does make you realise, as it's set in the '70's, how times have changed so dramatically and how what happened then wouldn't, you hope, happen now, plus no mobile phones !!!!!!
If you haven't read any of Tennison yet you really must, and soon, so that you can experience the whole series before the long awaited new title is published in July next year.
This is an incredible 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 read that any detective/murder mystery fan must read.
