Synopsis

Grab your life jacket and wrap up warm – it’s time to go polar! In this entertaining and highly informative book, expert field guide Huw Lewis Jones and nature illustrator Sam Caldwell take readers on an intrepid voyage to meet the eighteen species of penguin and to witness the conservation work underway to protect these incredible birds and their native habitats. By observing penguins first hand, readers will discover whether penguins truly like the cold, how their diving skills make up for the fact that penguins can’t fly, and how to tell what a penguin had for dinner based on the colour of its poo! You’ll travel by ship across mighty oceans, visit remote islands and trek across icy landscapes to discover all the different types of penguin, from emperors and kings to chinstraps and rockhoppers. This book is packed with facts, fun and everything there is to know about penguins and gives readers a taste of what it’s really like to work in the wild.

My Review

Wow, what an incredibly informative book this is. I started off with the idea that I would be reading and reviewing a children's book, however, this is so informative that it is suitable for any age from 6+. The layout of the pages and the balance between information and illustration is engaging and allows you to digest individual facts easily.

Each double page covers a different aspect about penguins making it ideal for discussing with younger children. The idea of setting off on an expedition to explore wild places with Huw and Sam on the first page is brilliant and they pop up on so many of the following pages too.

I have learnt so much about penguins whilst reading this book that I feel I could do reasonably well on Mastermind now and the young friend who read the book with me was really impressed by the fact that a , previously unknown, colony of penguins was spotted from space by the amount of "poop" on the satellite photographs !!!!!

On a more serious note though it also makes you aware that we have to really change what is happening with the planet if we are not going to find some of these penguin species becoming extinct.

This is definitely a 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 book that will appeal to both young and old alike.
