Synopsis

Stephen Marling thought he knew his aunt Flora. But when he inherits her house in a quiet south London square a series of discoveries among her papers brings to light another person entirely. Who, for example, is ‘Mr Magenta’ and what part did he play in her life? In the process of uncovering the secrets of one life, Stephen is forced to re-evaluate his own and decide what he really wants. Was he right to turn his back on Nancy Steiner, the young actress he met in New York, when he came home to take up his inheritance? Interweaving past and present, the story takes him from a Brooklyn bookshop to a theatre in Marseille to a cottage on the east coast of England where the truth about Mr Magenta is finally revealed.

My Review

Who is he ? Where is he ? What is he ? These will be the questions you may find yourself asking as you read this wonderful story about secrets, and the revealing of them, as Stephen finds out about his own life whilst also finding out about his late Aunt Flora.

I loved this story from start to finish as the mystery of Mr Magenta unfurls through page after page of intrigue, that leads the reader into the lives of Flora, in the past, and Stephen and Nancy, in the present. The concept for the novel is an intriguing one and it makes a refreshing change to read something so completely different from the general run of the mill mystery stories.

The settings are beautifully contrasting and allow you, as the reader, to move easily between Brooklyn, Marseille, London and an East Coast cottage, creating that wonderful concept of travel in your head that pulls you into a story where the threads weave together until they create a whole.

Christopher Bowden is a writer I have not come across before but, thanks to Mr Magenta,  he is certainly an author with a different that I will be reading more of in the future.

A beautiful 5 ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ๐ŸŒŸ read.
