Synopsis

“I am old. There was no warning: one minute I was young and the next I tipped into the world of old women. This book is about the joys and horrors of our old age. It will show you the uncensored reality of my experience and that of women who confided in me. You will find humor, despair, and some gritty bits but absolutely no euphemisms. You will either say 'Yes, that's me!' or 'Thank goodness this hasn't happened to me!” Unflinching, honest, and relatable, this illustrated book is neither a celebration of nor a complaint about old age. It is the simple, unadorned truth of a life. Fully illustrated throughout with cartoons and drawings, this fantastic new title shines the brightest of lights on ageing as a woman.

My Review

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I first opened this book, especially as I suppose I am not far off being classed as "Being a woman of a certain age". To be honest I found the whole book depressing at first, and it doesn't take long to read as Sylvia intersperses the writing with drawings and sketches , both humorous and thought provoking to support her writing.

When I went through the book for a second time I approached it from a different angle by thinking " Thank goodness that's not me at the current time" or " That is me and that's okay". Consequently I found the book far more enjoyable and humorous than before and was more appreciative of what Sylvia had produced.

My advice to and reader of a certain age is to be in a positive mindset when you pick this book up as you will get far more from it. If you are not in a positive frame of mind you may feel worse at the end of it!!!!!
